Help create better birth outcomes for all families. PHLA is a leadership training for community champions passionate about improving the maternal health of marginalized people. This round, we focus on advancing midwifery policy in California.
The Perinatal Health Leadership Academy is a 10-module, community-driven leadership training facilitated by Around-Birth Collective and our co-leads, with a curriculum inspired by CHIP's Resident Leadership Academy. It trains consumers and advocates of midwifery care in reproductive justice, and equips them to advance real state-level policy.
This round focuses on midwifery policy. You'll learn how racial disparities in California's maternal and postpartum care lead to worse outcomes for underserved families, how to advocate for rights throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care, and how to advance California bills that expand access to midwifery care and community birth. No prior policy experience required. We'll teach you everything.
The program runs August 2026 through August 2027. Most sessions are virtual, with two in-person convenings. Participants receive a $3,000 stipend and a certificate at completion.
In a recent community survey, 100% of respondents believed PHLA can improve birth outcomes, with zero neutral or opposed. This is a program our community asked for.
There's no single "right" background. PHLA is for community champions: doulas, clinical and non-clinical community providers, parents and caregivers, and everyone interested in reproductive justice.
